There are a myriad of sites popping up on the Internet that have been spurned, in my belief, by the online poker craze. One of these is online pool and snooker sites that allow the users to play for fun or even real money. Not so long ago the World Pool Association backed one of these sites but it never really got off the ground. Where this one failed others have come in it’s path. One of the most popular and heavily advertised on the web is Play89, this online pool room offers tournaments, free-rolls, real money matches and playing for fun much like an online poker room. Like poker rooms there is also regular sign-up bonuses for new players. To play the game you will need to download the free Play89 software but this is very straight forward to do, just allow the system to run as normal. What amazes me is that in some cases in the past it has been possible for online players to earn more oney than proper professional pool players, go figure! If you have played Play89 or any other online pool or snooker game then please let me know which one and I will see if I can write a review. Likewise if you feel inclined you can also submit a review for publication.

It is a proven fact that niche content has a place on the Internet. Cuesport TV is pretty much that niche content, insomuch that we focus on smaller, less publicized tournaments and pro-ams.I was thinking on my journey to Newport yesterday for the TCC Snooker Pro-am (as I often do whilst driving!) that perhaps Cuesport TV is not niche enough.Would we better serve our audience if we seperated our content further? What I essentially mean by this is that snooker is very different to English pool and likewise American pool. I do not just mean by the make up of the games, that much is obvious, but more down to the audiences that the content serves.English pool players and fans are not likely to follow snooker videos or the live snooker that we offer. By the same token snooker fans are unlikely to follow the pool video content that we make available.I am considering splitting our video content into two brand new, smaller channels in addition to the main one. Snooker TV and Pool TV.Does anyone have any thoughts on this? Am I right or wrong in my assumptions?

At the weekend myself and my wife travelled to Shepherd’s Bush in London for the latest GB Ball Tour event. We have been covering this tour since it’s inception in January 2008 and the tour has grown from strength to strength in terms of the organisation and the plyer depth. This event was held in a Rileys club with only 12 american pool tables, this caused a very late finish, that was not helped by allowing a long wait until the quarter finals started. There were a couple of matches in the challenge division that were being waited on. If I was running the tournament, as long as players and tables are available I would get matches on. This could have saved around 1 hour in the pro cup.I got a distinct feeling of tension at the tournament this weekend both from some of the players and some of the organisers. If the tour is to develop then these issues need to be solved asap.Cuesport TV support this tour for no financial reward so there is a possibility that in the future we will no longer offer the coverage.Well done to Mark Gray who lifted his first Pro Cup title with a 9-6 victory over Darren Appleton. He exorcised a few demons after the Nations Cup issues. You can watch all the matches from this tournament very soon on Cuesport TV.

In an ideal world Cuesport TV would be at every event throughout the UK to report on tournaments and the latest breaking news stories.Unfortunately that is impossible for a small company. We have to take time away from tournaments sometimes so that we can catch up with editing and the many other tasks related to running the channel. So, I have a plan!If you are at a pool or snooker tournament and just happe to shoot some video you can send it to us and we will host it and broadcast it to the world. If it is good enough quality then we can even add score graphics and titles – you will always be credited with the work so don’t worry. If you are interested in this then please drop me an email on enquiries @ cuesport.tv (remove spaces around @)

Not particularly related to pool or snooker but I read a number of business and marketing related books. They interest me, especially web marketing and the new ’social media’ phenomenon. The one I have just read is a great book by Seth Godin, I stumbled across Seth’s blog about three months ago and avidly read his daily blog posts that now come through directly to my inbox. You can find his blog here: Seth Godin. The writing style of the book I read is very much the style of his blog but with some case studies and slightly longer sections. The book in question is Purple Cow: Transform Your Business by Being RemarkableThe idea of the Purple Cow is a simple one, get your business noticed by providing a product or service that is remarkable. In this day and age it is important to stand out from the crowd. There are a lot of practical examples in the book and it is a must read for any business owner, whether your company operates on the web or the high street and whether it is large or small.Whilst I am on the subject, try this one as well: The New Rules of Marketing and PR: How to Use News Releases, Blogs, Podcasting, Viral Marketing and Online Media to Reach Buyers DirectlyThe next one on my list is also by Seth Godin, Tribes.Click on the links and you can find the books directly at Amazon.Have you read a great book recently? Please let me know, I would say it is my number one pastime outside of my work.

At the weekend (1st/2nd August) I travelled out to Keynsham Snooker Centre for the first event in this years 8-Ball Super Tour. This World Rules 8-Ball tour carries a huge £48,000 in prize money across the four events and as a result has pulled in all the best players in the land.It was also going to be a test for us at Cuesport TV.We had not had a full two-day weekend live event since we launched the subscriptions and were not sure what the response would be like, it turned out to be an excellent response. We have never ever believed that all of our 22,000 monthly viewers would pay, however, in order to drive the business forward in a tough climate it was better to take less viewers that appreciated the product enough to pay. This happened and so a big thanks to all of the viewers that did support us this weekend. On a side note Carl Morris beat Ronan McCarthy 8-6 to lift the title and £2700.00 first prize.

Over the next two weekends (August 8th and August 15th/16th) Cuesport TV are involved in live streaming three separate big money match ups.Burford vs Gray – Saturday 8th August, 5pm (UK Time) – Cuesport TVThe first on August 8th features, European Junior 9-ball Champion, Phil Burford and former European number 1, Mark Gray. These two stalwarts of the British 9-ball scene go head-to-head for £1000 per man. The game is 9-ball and it will be a race-to-30, winner breaks. The action for this event will be live over at Cuesport TV to paid up subscribers, something you can do for as little as £2.95. The action starts at 5pm with an undercard match between Andy Appleton (brother of World Number 1 Darren Appleton) and young up-and-coming player Louis Clarke. They are playing for £500 per man race-to-21 I believe and will be live also in advance of the main event.£10,000 Scotch Doubles Challenge – Saturday 15th August, 5pm (UK time) American Pool TVAnother evening of entertainment that starts with a tasty undercard match, UK Pro players Scott Higgins and Alan Millership match up for £500-per-man. Race-to-15 9 Ball action. A good precursor for what is to come at around about 7pm.The big match up on the cards on this particular night is an interesting one. Rarely do we see scotch doubles matches outside of the Mosconi Cup so this will be a treat.Karl Boyes & Chris Melling take on World number 1 Darren Appleton & Imran Majid. The Prize?A killer £10,000 winner-take-all pot. The match is 10 ball with a race-to-35 in operation, I expect a very close match, Boyes/Melling have a 5 rack start to make it even more interesting. This live event will be the first one shown on American Pool TV where you can buy the match in advance for £4.99 or on the night for £7.49 make sure you buy it, amazing match up.Simon Ward v Craig Reynold’s – Sunday August 16th, 3pm (UK Time) Cuesport TVAnother match for Cuesport TV subscribers.Simon Ward, one of the most consistent players of the 2008 season plays renowned money player and IPA professional Craig Reynol’ds for a £6,000 pot.Played to WEPF World Rules this one will appeal to the small-ball fans throughout the UK and Europe, possibly further afield. To watch this one a subscription is required.
